How to clean brake calipers?

Car brake calipers can get dirty. Over time, this is almost inevitable because of their location and the work they must undergo. Therefore, it may be necessary to clean brake calipers.

If you put a car or add more chrome, you may want to do it for aesthetic purposes. This is not a difficult job, but it does require some hard work.

1, remove the caliper

First gently loosen the lug on the wheel. Park the car on the jack stand, then loosen the jack and remove the wheel. Open the hood and brake fluid master cylinder. Cover the top of the liquid with plastic wrap and cover it to keep most of the vacuum on the brake fluid.

Next, you need to slightly relax the brake line, which is in line with the caliper. Do not unscrew it completely and place a tray underneath to catch any drip. Use a screwdriver to pry out the caliper spring clip and you should be able to see the outside caliper.

If the guide bolts on the caliper are covered, these can be removed. Then, you can loosen and remove the caliper bolts and take the calipers to close the rotor. Once the caliper is free, remove the brake pads from the caliper.

2, release the caliper

You will find brake lines on the calipers. When pulling out the caliper, do not twist the wire. Remove the vacuum cap made of rubber and insert it into the end. Put the end of the wire into the tray to prevent leaks.

3, ready to clean

Need to be able to access the piston on the brake caliper to clean it. To do this requires a compressed air source and an air nozzle. You also need a small board that is 0.5 inches thick. Put the wood between the caliper on the piston and the outer flange.

Insert the nozzle into the brake line hole in the caliper and compress it with compressed air. This will force the piston to leave. Make sure the hand stays away from this because it generates considerable power.

4, cleaning

To clean the piston, use a brake fluid and use a scrubbing pad to remove hard dirt and grease. If you find any dent in the piston, you need to replace it. To clean the caliper, use a scrub brush and brake fluid, which is the best way to remove grease and dirt.

Precautions

1. For smaller areas, use an old toothbrush that can penetrate small areas. Do this outdoors or at least in a well-ventilated area.

2. Where the dirt still exists, check the brake caliper again until it is completely clean. Replace the piston and then reinstall the brake cable before turning the brake caliper back.
